“When I was singing with emotion, there was this new thing that came out, which now I'm pretty known for, which is this raspiness and my register and I had never really done that before,” Hansen states. That rasp would become part of Hansen's sonic identity, but his description of discovering it is perhaps more revealing than the characteristic itself. He describes the moment as the beginning of singing “from my heart rather than my head” a feature of his music which now would feel incomplete without that degree of emotion and care.
