There is a whacky playfulness to Ray Chu’s collection, adorned with Nancy’s vibrators in the unsuspecting shapes of lemons, tennis balls and cherries. Their plasticky charm added to the theme of pleasure as captured by the amusing name of the collection: ‘Fans Only Club’. The collection was signalled by the recurring motif and title ‘Taiwan Banana Club’. With pastel blues synonymous with Chu’s branding, whites, diamanté, bedazzled sex toys, and silver sculptural pieces, there was a lot to be seen at the presentation.

Some of this may have gotten lost on me, maintaining the fun summery energy yet occasionally, I didn’t know where to look. Their brand new motif of ‘Taiwan Banana Club’ frequented the event, as seen on branded T-shirts for their S/S 27 collection. While I didn’t necessarily understand the connection between Chu’s runway and this recurring pattern, it certainly brought a light-hearted and sunny atmosphere to the small studio in Northampton Road.

The wearability of Chu’s S/S 27 is high - who doesn’t want to wear pastel blue and fruity motifs in the spring and summer? However, despite the love fruity patterns of the pieces, it was difficult to draw the conclusion between the ‘Taiwan Banana Club’; the wired, sprawling, silver sculptural designs that were placed around the room, and the feature of Nancy’s sex toys. It was a surprising amalgamation of themes and products, leading to a playful and sweet - albeit confusing - presentation.
