Joyride – the new single by Catty – was released on the 15th of May. It’s a celebration of queer love and joy, freedom and visibility all set within a pop-rock sound that will get stuck in your head for days.
The music video was directed by Sam Kinsella and stars Catty alongside her girlfriend, jewellery designer and I Kissed A Girl star Amy Spalding. Together they drive a vintage convertible in a Thelma & Louise inspired romance.
The couple co-wrote the music video and bounced ideas off each other. Amy shares that she first got the idea for the Thelma & Louise inspired story when she heard Joyride for the first time. “The film is very much about women loving. It’s a celebration of that love for women and that is very much our relationship. And the song felt very thrilling and exhilarating”, Amy tells me. To Catty, the film Thelma & Louise is what being gay feels like. Political and prioritising female empowerment. “They’re breaking boundaries, they’re breaking the norm”, Catty says. “It's in the name of justice for women and being lesbian is also anti patriarchal”, Amy adds.
“We need to see more sapphic stories and less tragedies”
As an independent artist, financing such a big project turned out to be more difficult than Catty had anticipated. Originally, the couple had planned to have a director, producer, runner, stylist and hair & makeup. But they quickly realised that they didn’t have the money for all that. “So we were literally looking at our own wardrobes like what can we style”, Catty laughs. Looking at the video you wouldn’t guess that Amy and Catty styled themselves. The grungy full jeans and Harley Davidson looks, complimented with thick eyeliner were the right choice for a modern punky Thelma & Louise.
“I think that’ such a good example for like how accessible the music industry is for people who don’t have money on the table. Like, it’s just not”, Catty explains.
During the video shoot, multiple things didn’t go as planned. They had rented a car from the 60s but getting the loan in the first place wasn’t easy. And then, the day before filming, the car got cancelled. “And then I’m scrambling, like putting on my story, ‘Hey anyone got this car I can borrow tomorrow?’ Turns out, not a lot of people”, Amy tells me. Luckily, Amy’s neighbour owned a vintage car and saved the day.
Apparently figuring out how to drive said car was a whole other issue.
So, what is Joyride about? What inspired the song? I ask Catty. The day the song was written, Catty went into the studio to share terrible news. “I was like, shit has hit the fan. I’m never gonna write a good song again because I’ve met somebody and I think they’re really nice and cool, and I’ve built my entire career off of breakups. So what do we do”, Catty recalls. Catty shares with me that she was terrified of falling in love again. That fear was exactly what her producer and co—writer wanted her to write about – and it made its way throughout the entire EP. “I immediately sent it to Amy after writing it and she said: This is gay”, Catty says.
Amy laughs and tells me how funny the whole experience was considering how early into the relationship they were. “We’re not even together officially and we’ve not said I love you, but she sends me this song she’s written about me and I’m like wow, you’re the one. Like it’s so gay”, they both laugh.
What was it like having someone write a song for you, I ask Amy. “It was crazy. It was insane. I’ve never had that before and what a song as well. So, for that to be the one that’s written about me is so insane”, Amy shares.
What Amy and Catty hope to achieve with Joyride is a queer love story without any tragedies. “I think if I was younger and I saw more positive experiences it would have been easier”, Catty says. They wanted to show that two women are happy to be together and feel like they can take over the world.
