“If in four years, it won’t even matter anymore, then it’s probably not worth stressing about today.”

Cheeky, giggly, and constantly hungry Eloise Thomas’s whimsical qualities left us in wonderment. Her youthful personality has always been surrounded by art in all forms of entities. Singing, dancing and acting are key artistic pillars in her lie that then allowed her to push creative boundaries in her adulthood. From a young age, the knack of performing and art was in her blood. Normalised and encouraged by the adults around her, she learnt the importance of art in our modern society, and how to sympathises it with the childlikeness she embodies. When stepping into the realm of adulthood, she chose to learn to perform through the eye of a camera lens rather than the traditional route of drama school. Learning from directors, operating alongside various crews, and engaging with independent filmmaking, she fell in love with film. Her love for complexity, the conquering of an obstacles in her way together with a meteoric opportunity, is prominent in most of her roles, as is her empathy with her characters displayed in eccentric ways. The connection she demonstrates with her characters gives a sense of individuality and relatability to the person she is.

Her latest role in ‘The Bay’, Thomas portrays a sulky, troublesome teen, ‘Izzy Metcalf’. Consumed by grief, ‘Izzy’ comes to terms with the tragic death of her mother, ‘Beth’ Metcalf’. Learning and growing, she has to find a way to live without her mother, while still trying to comprehend her own place in this relentless and blood-thirsty world. Interested yet refusing to accept the reality of the world around her, are common attributes she reveals and shares with ‘Izzy’. Eloise believes that this is her favourite role she has performed so far, and one where she manifested a deeper connection to the character, reminiscing of the bittersweet yet hot-blooded emotions she and many others felt when they were teenagers.

Incapsulating Eloise’s sprightly spirit, was a shared goal for the team, a group of creative artists who transformed the studio space into the perfect realm in which Thomas could blossom. Artist, Selina Grazia, coated the studio in preserved insects, varnished in pure metal. Grazia’s unceasing appetite for juxtaposing morality and fragility to explore the means of the natural world, was subtle in the photo shoot, allowing the simplistic placements of these insects to further heighten Thomas’s alluring energy.

“Honestly, how much fun I have working on set and how focused and thorough the work becomes when I take on a role is what motivates me to carry on. When one job finishes, I’m always so excited to see what the next role will be whether it’s a show that goes on for 6 months or even a 3 day short film, I just love being in that little creative bubble with a team.”

I think advice that I am trying to also stick to is to number one. not be too hard on myself and to not only upkeep my training through classes and going to the theatre, watching films but to also just take inspiration from daily life, the people you encounter and the little observations! It’s really easy to feel bogged down by a tumultuous career like this one but reminding yourself that the lifestyle of being an actor or a creative where you get to channel everything you experience into your work, where every day a work is something completely new is actually very unique and exciting.

The help of fashion designers, Polina Oleynikova and Francesca Palumbo, immersed artistry within each fibre of Thomas’s selected looks. Palumbo’s knit savviness collections followed the contours and nature forms of the female body, with the exploration of uniquely coloured waves of yarn and a combination of textures and drapes. Empowered yet comfortable, Palumbo ensured that Thomas would ooze confidence through the intricate designs of each individual knit wear she had selected for this editorial. Oleynikova’s intimate creations enables her to vary her style from media, to photography and then to sculpture; her designs creating a compelling journey. Freedom to think, speak and listen allows Oleynikova to provide Thomas’s creative exploration through sophisticated designs that utter her unspoken story. Sofia Solazzi was given the task of grasping the depiction we needed for Thomas, through the power of a camera lens. Her devotion to detail and the uniqueness of camera work, allows the precious moments we had the opportunity to share with Thomas to be captured before falling into the oblivion of our memories.

Overall, the editorial was a harmonious experience that was not only led by but fed by the team’s visionary desires. Thomas is a magnetic spirit that exudes rays of sunshine through her bubbly laugh and thoughtful words. The art, photography and collection of exploratory clothes were the sparks for something beautiful, an occasion that enabled each of us to rekindle our everlasting love for the arts.
